Most residents in nursing homes may have communication disabilities due to diseases, changes physically, psychologically and socially. In this regard, more patience and extra time is required to communicate with them. It is always necessary to talk with older people in any way possible to maintain the most effective means of reaching out to them.

- Analyze the surrounding before starting to talk with them.
- Reduce background noises like turning off the radio or television or shutting the door to eliminate distracting sounds.
- Begin the conversation with informal topics like asking them what they have for breakfast. Definitely avoid harsh information. Then continue on with more familiar topic like families and their interests.
- Maintain eye contact as you talk with them.
- Asking questions are good but keep it short? If it took longer time for them to answer, that's alright. It is normal. Do not hurry them. They can function well in slow phase. Give them the chance to remember their memories.
- And most importantly be a good listener.
These are effective tips sis. My FIL is tickled whenever we visit and talked to him for a long time.

ReplyDeletei guess for my experience be a good listener! my father in law is 80years old already even he is using hearing aids it is still very hard for him to hear. older person loves to reminisce their good ole' days when they are young so jsut listening with their never ending story is really good!

ReplyDeleteFor one 'oldies' tend to talk much but is ill-tempered to listen. The best way to open a conversation with one is to tell him/her how beautiful he/she is.

ReplyDeleteThis is a good post sis. Most times, the younger generation just don't understand the elders. They tend to get impatient with the elders without knowing what our senior citizens are going through. It pays to know these to be more considerate.

ReplyDeleteI worked in a nursing home for seven months before giving birth to my son when I first came to America. You learn to love them like your grandparents. It is very challenging to talk to them to be honest but you just have to be patience. Thank you for the tips too.

ReplyDeleteCommunication is a two-way process. The moment the older person notices that we listen to him or her properly, she or he will begin to trust us. In return, the result would be an effective and efficient communication.
