What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy or otherwise known as Hyperbaric medicine is a kind of therapy that uses pure oxygen or high level of oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. According to Mayo Clinic, the air pressure inside this chamber is three times higher than normal atmospheric pressure.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

What conditions can be treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, you asked? It is a very effective treatment in decompression sickness, serious infection or necrotizing soft tissue infections, carbon monoxide poisoning, wounds not healing due to diabetes, gangrene,  crush injury, radiation injury, Alzheimer's disease, burns, autism, HIV/AIDS and so many more.

Experts are continuously studying about this therapy in order strengthen it's use in treating different conditions. With it's proven effectiveness, we should also be aware that it must not be performed to patients suffering from untreated tension pneumothorax as it may worsen the condition. If a person is taking Cisplatin, Doxorubicin, Disulfiram or Mafenide acetate, he is not advised to undergo such therapy.

Although it is proven a safe procedure, complications may still arise. Among these complications are organ damage due to changes of air pressure, temporary myopia, or damaged eardrums due to high air pressure. These are rare complications but can still occur to some undergoing HBO therapy.

Wikipedia enumerated the therapeutic principles of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Let me just simplify it. Basically HBO therapy is conducted to increase the level of air pressure in the tissue and blood steam while reducing static gas bubbles inside the body.
