What is Clopidogrel?

Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet drug that is proven to reduce Myocardial Infarction (MI), vascular deaths and stroke in peripheral arterial disease.  It interfere with adenosine diphosphate-induced membrane-mediated platelet-fibrinogen which decrease the platelet aggregation and prevent thrombus formation. This drug is given if anticoagulants are ineffective treatment. 


Dosage

Available dosage strength of Clopidogrel is 75mg. The dose to be taken depends on doctors assessment of the patients case. 


Contraindication

Clopidogrel is not prescribed to patients with active-bleeding, breast-feeding with severe liver impairment, peptic ulcer and intra-cranial hemorrhage. 


Drug Interaction

The following drugs alter the effects of Clopidogrel:
  • Aspirin
  • Warfarin
  • Heparin
  • NSAIDs
  • thrombolytics
  • glycoprotein llb/lla inhibitors

Brands Available

Clopidogrel is available in different brands. 
  • Plavix 75 mg 
  • Plagerine 75 mg
  • Clopivaz 75 mg
Aside from all these brands, there is also a generic plavix which you can buy in drugstores.

Clopidogrel is a prescription medication. You can't buy one without a proper script from a doctor. Always make sure that you are seen by the doctor before taking any medication. Avoid self-medication.  It can worsen your disease in doing so.
