Remember 123ABC in CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation)
STEPS:
By performing CPR, you keep oxygenated blood flowing to the heart and brain until defibrillator becomes available. This increase the chance of survival and further prevention of brain damage.
Note: In Philippines the National Emergency Telephone Number is 1-1-7. Not all mobile phone accepts that as the emergency number. In that case you need to enter 9-1-1 or 1-1-2 which will automatically redirected to 1-1-7. However, if you choose to use the service "Text 1-1-7", you need to send your message directly to 1-1-7.
- 1 - Check if the scene is safe. This means you assure that you are safe to help.
- 2 - Check the victim by tapping and shouting to get response.
- 3 - Call for help. If alone in the scene, call 1-1-7 before starting CPR. Otherwise, ask someone to call. Be ready to give them the number you are calling from, location of the incident and the chief complaint.
- A - AIRWAY. Check the airway by tilting the head, lifting the chin up to open airway. Look, listen and feel for any signs of breathing.
- B - BREATHING. Do this by pinching the nose closed, covering victim's mouth with yours and blowing out breath unti chest rise. Give 2 rescue breaths.
- C - CIRCULATION. Perform chest compressions ( 30 compressions and 2 breaths cycle, repeat for 5 times)
- Repeat A-B-C until help arrives or the victim begins breathing.
What are the safety concerns and issues?
- Make sure the scene is safe before helping. Don't become another victim.
- Check for responsiveness before doing the CPR.
- Beware for suspected spinal, neck, or head injury.
- Execute compressions and rescue breathing properly.
- Create tight seal in giving ventilations.
Communication is important in doing CPR. First, when doing it with someone else. 'Who will do what ' must be clear between two persons resuscitating. Second, when calling the help. Stating the exact scenario and all vital information is important. Lastly, give concise account when handing over the case to the help that arrived.
